This week us the X-Office released the "Year of the X-Men" teasers for Uncanny X-Men, Uncanny X-Force, New Mutants and X-Men Legacy. First we'll take a look at each of them and then try to figure out and hypothesize what the hell is "Year of the X-Men".(Disclaimer: I'm going to be stating things that are blantaly obvious so be warned)
Who knows. I'm enjoying his time with the Thunderbolts but like i said before who knows. In my personal opinion this is the least intriguing of the teasers.
I've never been that big of a fan of the New Mutants, for the simple reason that i've never really had any emotional attachment to a character from that generation of Mutants. But as my pals over on CBR know...if Nate Grey is there so am I.
Nate has always been a favorite of mine going back to growing up in the 90s even when i wasn't really into X-Men and American comics. Manga had sole ownership of my soul for a decade before it decided to share.
Now I am well aware that most people on CBR don't like Nate a whole lot. The reasons are many but oh well. I like him and in the end that's all that really matters. Someday you might be able to read my "X-Man & Hellion" story/pitch.
But back to the teaser. Nate is defending Blink, whom just recovered from the darkness that Selene had planted in her, from what appears to be Dani Moonstar, Magik, and Sunspot.
The three questions that arise from this teaser are: Why is Nate protecting Blink? Why are the NM after Blink? And why is purpose of "We will get them, no matter what."
The answer to the first question is pretty simple: its Nate's job as a Shaman to protect mutants from harm; even if its from other mutants. So the main question is this: what did Blink do that would invoke the wrath of the NM?
Now another thing that should be noted is that NM does not have a creative team as of yet...though I got a feeling we'll be finding out pretty soon who is on the book.
Ah good ol' X-Men Legacy. What we have here are Magneto, Xavier, Rogue, Gambit, Legion and Frenzy looking at us with the tag line of "We will not let our pasts define our future."
I'm thinking this might turn into a sort of X-Men version of the Thunderbolts. Have all the mutants with shady pasts on a team trying to build a better future and to make up for their past deeds. If this is true, I'm ok with it. I would like to see Avalanche on the team cuz this would be a good fit for the former Brotherhood member.
This biggest question that arises from this teaser is this: Why is Frenzy sporting her Age of X look?
Personally i like the look a zillion times more than her current look; but I believe the main thing is this: how will the 616 be affected by the events of Age of X? Maybe we'll see more of the redesigns stick. Ray-Man Hellion would be cool.
Last but certainly not least is Uncanny X-Force. This teaser is my personal favorite because it looks like X-Force is being attacked by the Age of Apocalypse. I also like the art...it reminds me of Mike Choi and Sonia Obak.
The questions that arise from this one are the following: Why is the AoA attacking? Where the hell is Archangel?
The quote "We will not let anyone else fall", could possibly answer the Archangel question. But that then brings up back to the question of why is the AoA attacking. If this is a big ass crossover it might be that they want to see they're old pal Nate Grey, who hails from the AoA.
Another thing to note that might be cool to see is Kirika vs X-23. Kirika is pretty much the AoA counterpart of X-23 and instead of being a clone she's the daughter of Wolverine and Mariko Yashida plus she has three claws in her arms as opposed to X's 2 and 1 foot claw.
Overall i'm excited about these previews. I'm intrigued as to see what these teasers me and the whole idea of "Year of the X-Men" is about. And luckily true believers we'll find out soon enough. Marvel announced that they're going to doing a daily online press conference with the fans about each of the tittles and the whole "Year of the X-Men" idea.
One thing to consider is this: is "Year of the X-Men" idea the big X-even set for July-October? Or is it just a prelude? Will this be apart of the rumored X-Schism that is looming on the horizon.
I'll do a blog on next Friday summarizing the weeks news.
And always remember when some asks if you paid your dues...just look em straight in the eye and say "Yes Sir... the check is in the mail"
